They used to call it a foot in the door and for me it was exactly that. It led to a decade working for the most prestigious broadcasting organisation on the planet.

Today you can't just rock up and start making the tea for the sports team as I did in the 90s. The BBC has organised its trainee and apprenticeship opportunities on more formal lines. 

On the one hand this is a fair system and rightly so for a publicly funded body. On the other, it would certainly have precluded an under qualified wannabe like me and I suspect several others who are now familiar BBC names.

There was something to be said for knocking on doors, making yourself useful and being friendly. But now I'm sounding like my parents...

The good news is that if you know a keen youngster - the opportunities are coming...
